Cobourg’s 2022 Operating Budget is increasing 6.3%. After accounting for New Assessment Growth of 2.2%, the average resident will see an increase of 4.1% but for some the increase will be much more. Other municipalities tax increases are much lower.
During the Town’s budget review on December 8, 2020, the Art Gallery of Northumberland (AGN) was included as part of the Divisional Staff Presentations for the 2021 budget meetings.
When did the AGN become part of one of the Town’s Divisions?
The Town has released its 2020 Town of Cobourg Releases 2020 Municipal Operating and Capital Budget Schedule. The Town has a budget page with the budget schedule, news releases, and the budget documents.
In recent weeks, Toronto Mayor John Tory has slammed the Ford government’s spending plans, arguing that proposed funding levels for municipalities will lead to service reductions. City officials have chimed in, arguing these changes may also necessitate tax increases.
Toronto (as do other municipalities) has other options, including curbing spending on its wage bill for city employees, reducing administrative costs and reforming public services so they’re as good or better—at lower cost.
In Part 1, we said, “In order to thrive, Cobourg Council must prioritize effectively”. Nowhere is this more important than when setting the Town’s operating and capital budgets. In fact, it will be one of our Council’s first duties.
