On December 1, 1856, Cobourg Mayor D. E. Boulton presided at the laying of the cornerstone for Victoria Hall. The Cobourg Star wrote that “great as our progress has been our past is but a trifle to the great future which lies yet unopened before us.”
At the September 30 Council meeting, the mayor abused his position of power and betrayed the trust of Cobourg residents by slamming the “vocal minority” and telling them to move away if they don’t like it here.
The Cobourg Taxpayers Association has responded with an Open Letter to the mayor with copies to current Councillors, Municipal Candidates, other Northumberland Ratepayer groups and the media.
There was recently a radio program hosted by a professor on “the proper balance in municipal government”
During his career the professor had worked on both sides: first as a staff member – where he referred to the office of the elected official as “the dark side” – and then as an elected member of Council where he could see the other reality.
Imagine a retired couple moving to Cobourg from North Bay with a passion for curling only to find that not only are Cobourg rinks fully booked, but prime time is given to visiting teams from Bowmanville and Oshawa. These visitors are considered by the town to be “tourists” and especially desirable for preferential treatment.
We still want to ask the Candidates questions about where they stand on key issues. We can’t ask them about every issue but we can create a few key questions about the important issues.
We do want to know what Cobourg citizens think the top issues are.
